Import Duty Calculator

Calculate the total landed cost of an import: the assessable value plus all customs duty, surcharge, and GST.

How import costs stack up

When you import, charges stack in layers. Customs duty applies to the value of the goods. The surcharge is a percentage of that duty. GST is applied to the whole amount—value plus all duties. Added together, they give you the landed cost.

The exact rates depend on what you're importing and any trade agreements. We let you enter the rates rather than guess, because they change. If you're a registered business importing for your business, you can usually reclaim the GST as an input credit. Check our other tax calculators for more details.

Common questions

What does assessable value mean?

It's the value that customs bases duty on—normally the cost of goods plus insurance and freight. Duties are calculated on this, not just on the invoice price.

How is IGST figured on imports?

IGST is applied to the assessable value plus the customs duty plus the surcharge. It's not just on the goods value. That's why it comes last in the calculation.

Can I get back the GST I paid on imports?

If you're a registered business importing for business purposes, you can usually claim the IGST as input tax credit. But the customs duty and surcharge are just costs.
