HRA Exemption Calculator
See how much of your house rent allowance is tax-free. It's based on the smallest of three limits.
How much HRA is tax-free
Your tax-free HRA is whichever is smallest of three amounts: what you actually received, rent paid minus 10% of basic, or 50% of basic in a metro (40% elsewhere). The rest is taxable income.
Usually the "rent minus 10% of basic" limit is the tightest, so paying actual rent and keeping receipts really matters. This rule applies under the old tax regime only. For other salary questions, check our salary calculators.
Common questions
Do I get HRA exemption under the new tax regime?
No. HRA exemption only works under the old regime. The new regime has lower tax rates but removes most deductions, including HRA.
Which cities are considered metros for HRA?
Only four: Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, and Chennai. They use a 50% limit. Every other city—including Bengaluru and Hyderabad—uses 40%.
Can I claim HRA if I pay rent to my parents?
Yes, as long as you actually pay them rent and can prove it—like through bank transfers with a record. Your parents then report that rent as their income.
