How discounts work
A discount is a percentage off the original price. To find the savings, multiply the price by the discount percentage and divide by 100. Subtract that from the price to see what you actually pay.
Be careful with "discount on discount" offers—the second discount applies to the already-reduced price, not the original. So two 20% discounts don't equal 40% off. Each one applies to what's left from the one before. If you need to add GST after, check our GST calculator.
Common questions
How do I calculate a discount?
Multiply the original price by the discount percentage, then divide by 100 to get your savings. Subtract that from the original. This calculator does both at once.
How do multiple discounts work together?
Each discount applies to the price after the previous one, not the original. Two 20% discounts aren't the same as one 40% discount. Apply them one at a time.
Does GST come before or after the discount?
Tax is charged on the discounted price, so the discount applies first, then GST is calculated on what remains.
