Tip & Split Calculator
Work out the tip on a bill, the total, and how much each person owes when you split it.
Splitting a bill fairly
Add a tip as a percentage of the bill, then divide the total by the number of people. You get a clean per-head figure, so nobody has to do mental arithmetic at the table.
How much to tip varies a lot by country. In the US, 15–20% is normal at restaurants; in much of the world a small tip or none is fine, especially when a service charge is already on the bill. Set the percentage to whatever fits where you are.
Common questions
Should I tip on the amount before or after tax?
That's up to you, and many people tip on the pre-tax total. If a service charge is already included, an extra tip is optional.
How much should I tip?
It depends where you are. Around 15–20% is usual in US restaurants, while in much of the world a small tip or simply rounding up is fine, and nothing is expected where service is already charged.
What if the bill doesn't split evenly?
The per-person figure is rounded to the nearest cent, so tiny differences can show up. In practice people round to a convenient amount.
