CAGR Calculator

Find the annual growth rate that takes an investment from its starting value to its ending value over a number of years.

What CAGR tells you

CAGR is the steady yearly rate that would take your starting amount to your ending amount over the period. It smooths out the bumpy real returns into one comparable number.

It's handy for comparing investments that ran for different lengths of time, since it puts them on a per-year footing. It hides the ups and downs, though, so pair it with a look at the actual swings. More tools are in our finance calculators.

Common questions

How is CAGR different from total return?

Total return is the overall percentage gain across the whole period. CAGR converts that into a single yearly rate, which makes a 3-year and a 7-year investment directly comparable.

Does CAGR account for volatility?

No. It only looks at the start and end values, so two investments with the same CAGR could have had very different rides in between. It's a summary, not the full story.

Can CAGR be negative?

Yes. If the final value is below the initial value, the CAGR is negative, showing the average yearly rate of decline over the period.
